FAQ

General Information

Q: What is Street Stewards?

A: Street Stewards is a San Diego-based 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to keeping neighborhoods clean by organizing block adoptions and group cleanups. We connect volunteers who are passionate about the environment to foster a sense of pride and responsibility within their communities.

Q: How does Street Stewards work?

A: Our program allows individuals, families, or businesses to adopt a block and commit to keeping it clean. Volunteers can also join scheduled group cleanup events. We provide guidance and support to make participation easy and impactful.

Q: Why is it important to participate?

A: Litter and pollution negatively impact communities by harming the environment, discouraging community engagement, and reducing property values. By participating, you contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming neighborhood.

Getting Involved

Q: How can I sign up to be a Street Steward?

A: You can sign up on our website by selecting an available block to adopt or participating in a group cleanup event. (We avoid the complications/barriers of registration in advance)

Q: Is there a cost to participate?

A: No, participation is completely free! We encourage volunteers to use their own supplies when possible, but we also provide resources when available.

Q: Do I need to commit to a long-term cleanup schedule?

A: We encourage block adopters to clean their area at least once a month, but we understand that schedules vary. Group cleanups are flexible and allow you to participate as often as you’d like.

Q: Can businesses or organizations participate?

A: Absolutely! We welcome businesses, schools, and community groups to adopt blocks or sponsor cleanup events. This is a great way to give back and make a visible impact in your local area.

Q: Can children participate?

A: Yes! We welcome families and youth groups to join our cleanups. We do ask that children be supervised by an adult to ensure their safety. (This is mostly a roadside event and we need to be cautious with children’s participation. See the stay safe section and use that)

Supplies & Cleanup Guidelines

Q: What supplies do I need to participate?

A: Basic supplies include gloves, trash bags, and a trash picker. If you don’t have supplies, we may be able to provide them depending on donations received and availability.

Q: How should I dispose of the trash I collect?

A: We recommend using your residential trash bins or public waste bins. For large amounts of waste, we can provide guidance on proper disposal methods.

Q: What types of waste should I avoid picking up?

A: For safety reasons, please avoid hazardous materials such as needles, broken glass, and unknown liquids. If you encounter hazardous waste, report it to the appropriate city department.

Community & Impact

Q: How does my participation make a difference?

A: Every volunteer contributes to a cleaner, more inviting neighborhood. Your efforts help prevent waste from reaching the ocean, create a healthier environment, and inspire others to take action.

Q: Can I track the impact of my efforts?

A: Yes! We encourage participants to log their cleanups on our website and share before-and-after photos. You can see your pickups recorded on community maps on our website when you log them. They are recorded in green when they are new, turn yellow over time as they age, and then turn red when they are over a couple months old. This creates a real time map where you can see the health of your community and go help where it is needed most! This also helps us measure our collective impact and recognize dedicated volunteers.

Q: How can I spread the word about Street Stewards?

A: Share your experience on social media, invite friends and family to join, and encourage local businesses to participate. The more people involved, the greater the impact!

Support & Contact

Q: How is Street Stewards funded?

A: We received San Diego County grants from Districts 3,4, and 5 for the development of our website and launching Community Captains Programs across the county. We rely on donations, sponsorships, and community support to fund maintenance costs, supplies and events. If you’d like to contribute, you can donate through our website.

Q: How can I contact Street Stewards?

A: You can reach us via email or through our website’s contact form. Follow us on social media to stay updated on events and community initiatives.

Q: What if I want to organize a special cleanup event?

A: We love collaborating on community projects! If you have an idea for a special cleanup or corporate volunteer event, reach out to us to discuss how we can help make it happen.

Q: What is a Community Captain?

A: A Community Captain promotes Street Stewards in their community to grow adoptions and participation in group cleanups. They can lead the group cleanups, promote through social media, or networking.

We appreciate your interest in Street Stewards and look forward to working together to keep San Diego clean and beautiful!
